Built-in camcorder microphones hear everything around them, including handling noise and the operator’s own voice. The Canon DM-50 replaces that with a directional microphone that slides onto the camcorder’s Advanced Accessory Shoe and concentrates on the sound in front of the lens.
It offers a shotgun mode that narrows pickup to the subject, ideal for interviews and speeches, and a stereo mode that adds the surrounding ambience for concerts, ceremonies and travel footage. Because it draws power and passes audio through the shoe, there are no cables to route and no separate batteries to remember.
Compatibility matters: the DM-50 is designed for Canon camcorders with the Advanced Accessory Shoe, such as the XL2, GL2 and the VIXIA HV20, HV30, HV40 and HG10. Camcorders with the newer Mini Advanced Shoe or a standard hot shoe will not accept it, so check your camera’s shoe before ordering. Two windscreens are included to tame wind noise outdoors.
