Few lenses change a beginner’s photography as quickly as an inexpensive 50mm f/1.8. The EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is light at 160g, sharp, and bright enough to blur backgrounds in a way kit zooms simply cannot, which is why it is often the first lens photographers buy after their camera.
Compared with its predecessor, it gains a gear-type STM motor that focuses more quietly, useful for video, plus full-time manual focus in One-Shot AF, a seven-blade circular aperture for rounder highlights and a durable metal mount. Close focus improves to 0.35m for 0.21x magnification, handy for food and product shots.
On APS-C DSLRs such as the EOS 2000D, 250D or 90D it acts like an 80mm portrait lens; on full-frame it is a classic standard. It also works on EOS R mirrorless cameras through the EF-EOS R adapter, so it stays useful if you change systems.
